Task 4: 30.1.4 TV Adverts and their Persuasive Techniques

Product Name: Marks&Spencers Christmas Commercial with the XFactor contestants
Persuasive Techniques: This is incorperating the Christmas sprit into the advert, making it somewhat universal
Product USP: This is by no contest, having the XFactor contestants feature in this commercial. The XFactor is the big thing happening at the moment and has everybody talking. It greats the impression that the fans and supportes of the singers, may go and shop at M&S.

Product Name: British Red Cross- Famine
Persuasive Techniques: This advert is very good at playing on the emotions of the audience. It's very stratigistly produce. Almost makes  the audience memeber feel guilty for not want to help, resulting to them feeling forced to do the part
Product USP: The British Red Cross, are advertising for a good cause. Everybody that participates in helping this charity is essentially, saving the children suffering with Famine's lifes.
Product Name: L'Oreal Commercial Featuring Beyoncé Knowles
Persuasive Techniques: Catering to all different hair types and all different people
Product USP: Using world wide sensation- Beyoncé has definatly done something for this commercial. It also used one of her well know tracks 'Naught Girl' in an instrumental form. I'm sure Beyoncé's long line of devoted fans, would have been the first to purchase this product.

Task 5: 30.1.5- Audience Profiling and Demographics

This is a very obvious choice for me, when it comes to particular gender related adverts. It is clear to see that this is aimed at men. Although it only, uses what can only be described as middle aged men, I feel that any male who has started shaving, this may appeal to.

This advert, like the previous is too obviously to detect its target audience. This is I believe are male/ females between 60/70+ or maybe anybody with back problems, who find it challenging to travel up and down the stair. This Stannah StairLift, will come handy to them.

This advert is just adorable. The end of this commercial always has me in stitches, so I decided to choose it as my final Audience profiling example. Although it uses toddlers (all boys, i've realised) to sell it's product, this advert is aimed at the parents, I feel. They will be the ones making the decisions on what to feed their children.

Task 6 (30.1.6) A.S.A

The Regulators:
The Advertising Standard Authorities are the people who regulate TV adverts within the UK. They are also responsible for dealing with audience complaints. This will involve an audience member who has taken personal offence to what has been seen on TV.
It’s straight forward how to go about making a formal complaint. Everything you’d need to know will be set up on the ASA website for you beforehand. Firstly one has to check that the advertisement they wish to complain about is covered by the ASA. Secondly, if it is covered by the ASA, then proceed with your complaint online, simply give them a call or write in. You will then be assigned somebody that will be personally dealing with your case. Considering the severity of your complaint, the advertisement in question will be removed from any form of viewing within the UK.
Analysing TV Banned TV adverts: F Word.
In this advert, we are presented with some of the world’s most famous actor/actress and musicians. They all appear on screen one by one, and pronounce what seems like the offensive word ‘FUCK’. Their mouths and sounds are censored with a black rectangular box. Initially, it appears as though they are saying this obscene words, however later on in the commercial we are made aware of what they are saying as its in content to what they’re advertising- Famine.
I feel that advert was banned as it may have been deem inappropriate as it creates the illusion that foul language is being used. Later, after researching this advert in more detail I came across and article in ‘Clear Cut’ stating that it was cancelled as the advert was being broadcast but people whose intentions were wholly and mainly political. This breached the rules against political advertisement.
Summary:
Personally, I quite like this advert and feel that it informs the public of the problems regarding Famine around the world. It also incorporates some of the most famous and inspirational people in the world, who have earned their rights as fan’s role models.

H&M advert Amiee Wolf Ft Bubblez ;)

Evaluation of Advert.

When first finding out that the next project was the chance to create our own television adverts for a existing product, I was excited and already knew what I wanted to do. I initially planned to created an advert for a shampoo- 'Head and Shoulders'. Unfortunately when properly thinking about it, this idea proved difficult and unrealistic as the facilities needed, weren't made available to us.

I then started thinking about advert I had seen on TV and came up with the idea of advertising for H&M. There television advert has always been something that I've enjoyed watching and wanted to see if I produce something half as good, if not better.

My advert is very simply produced. It consists of a photo-shoot that has been film, with some pictures of clothes including 'evening wear', 'day wear' and more. We used backstage footage and real photo shoot pictures to sell our product.

The video shows behind the scenes of the shoot- which normally isn't incorporated in a normal H&M advert. I thought this would be a good way to engage the audience in the product and the commercial. By the looks of the feedback that I've received, I'd say it's worked.

When trying to start the filming of our commercial, we had a lot of obstacles come our way which proved hard of over come. Our biggest problem was trying to get a member of staff to supervise us during the shoot session in the photo- shoot studio. After two days of trying, we finally manage to get hold of someone. Everything there onwards, went swimmingly. With the helpful hands of Doran, Mohan and Nathaniel we were able to get all the shots we needed under 4 hours. The filming process especially for me- was the best part of this entire task. It was so much fun, and provided me with a lot of jokes and laughter, curtesy of my co-star Naomi Ediru.
I was every much surprised at how professional the pictures looked. I had my doubts when told we'd have to use the college photo studio. The usage of equipments, were bearable as the video recording standards were mediocre.

However, I feel like as team we concentrated more on the pre-production as opposed to the post- production which is something I have a habit of doing. Devoting all my time and energy to the pre-production leave me with less time to complete all the post-productional work. This is an aspect of my learning style that I have to alter, if I plan on doing well in this course.

The editing for me, was the biggest difficulty that I personally had (whereas Naomi speeded through it). I cannot edit footage AT ALL! I feel I'm strongest when it comes to written work. I find it easy to complete paper work than do anything too technical. This too, I have to work on.

In terms of the levels of professionalism my advert had- I'd say I was pretty content with it. All the feedback received stated pretty much the same things "I really like your advert and it looked very professional. It's something I could see on the television"...or along the lines, off.

The target audience for our commercial was woman of 16+. Although H&M adverts are traditionally aimed at either sex audiences of the same age range but as we had no male feature in our advert, I'd thought it'd be very hard to convince men that it was created for them.

I believe that our USP is the behind the scene footage that we added in the final advert. I think it makes the audience want to have fun with us, and feel apart of our 'team'.

Like I briefly mentioned earlier in the evaluation, everybody's comments were based around the same things. However, something that they all picked up on, was the ending of the commercial. As the pictured appear on screen one after the other, people comment and said, that they would have though the commercial better if they were given a little more time to took at the pictures better before they were rushed off of the screen. They all said that the ending was a little unsettling. So this is something that I have to concentrate on in the future.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed this project and I'am incredibly proud of myself. This is the first piece of work that I've entirely completed...so "YAY ME!"

Task 3: 30.1.3

This is an Advertisement for the SR toothpaste which was released and aired in the year of 1955. I feel that although dated in comparison the latter advert of what could only be described as selling the same product...it is contemporary to it's time.

It has been filmed in black and white, as I don't think that color television had been invented by that era. The register used is very formal and demonstrates Standard English. The sort that a news present would embody.

The advert is presented with a lot of statistical information, which I feel add to the selling of the product. Using Statistics, creates an assumption that the product being advertised, is deem reliable and trustworthy.

With this television commercial being release early this year, I would say that it was very modern and contemporary.

The reason I like this advert, and why I personally do use Colgate toothpaste is because the advert had been experimentally produced. This meaning, that they've used what appears as a member of the 'public' to test out their product and come back and tell them what they've thought of it. I believe that using this technique personalised the product to the consumers. It appeals to everyone, as everybody does or should brush their teeth.

The additional information, although in small print to stop the audience from being distracted from the main advert; are very informative and outline some facts that have not been mentioned. I especially liked the visual aids of what this toothpaste fights against.

Task 2: 30.1.2

Type of Persuasive Techniques
Links to Adverts which uses these techniques
The Anecdote
The Lorrel  hair product advert. The Tag line of ‘Because your worth’ it makes use feel exactly that and adds a personal attachment to the product being sold
Adjectives
Morrisions superstore advert: It suggest that everything sold within that supermarket is as healthy and natural and ever. Especially incorporating a famous sportsman; Freddie Flintoff within suggest, if their products are good enough for him, then they are good enough for us ….’Normal people’
Repetition
A prime example of an advert that uses repetition in order to sale their product, is by far the most annoying advert in the history of advert; Go Compare, car insurance. Although very irritating, this advert works very well. It uses a catchy song, which is also the URL of the company. Next time people will be at their computer, they will remember the URL and are likely to visit it.
Statistics
Dove Body Lotion Adverts: Using what appears as factual information to sale a product works, in my opinion. This advert uses this device when saying things such as ‘95% of woman chose this as their daily body lotion’
Fact
If something is presented as having been proven and it is assumed to be reliable and trustworthy. The NSPCC Children advert is a very effective advert. It’s an emotive production that doesn’t fail to pull on ones heartstrings. Nearly brought a tear to my eyes…. But I’m better than that ;)

Task 1: 30.1.1 Introduction to the History of Advertising

30.01.1
1: Explain what is meant by Tv Advertising.

  • Tv Advertising refers to something that has been produced and paid for by an organization that conveys a message that is intended to market a particular product.

2: View three different contemporary  TV adverts and list Three key characteristics of them.

  • Beyonce Knowles perfume entitled 'Heat'. The USP, I believe is her sole appearance. Her being one of the most iconic woman in the world, alone should be enough to get her product sold. As she has many fans from all over the world, it is deemed sure that this product was predicted to be successful.
  • KFC Advert. This is my all time favorite advert. This is being due to its USP. It uses humor and a jungle to advertise and sale its product. The jingle is still remembered by millions even though the advertisement has seized to be shown on the television.
  • 'We Buy Any Car', insurance advert. This television work so well due to its catch tune that it incorporated. This then went on to be available for people to purchase on ITunes.
3: Follow this link and answer the following question
  • On an Average day Americans are estimated to be bombarded with 3,000 adverts.
  • They are likely to view these adverts on buses, television, on the floor, supermarkets, phone booths, shelves of their local corner shop and plenty more.
  • The most uttered word within the English word is said to be 'Ok', with 'Coca-Cola'.
  • Leo Bennett believed that the right icon could sale anything to anyone. He also thought that although people couldn't connect to say, cigarettes that they were more likely to relate more to 'Malboro Man'
  • Although advertising as been around for many years, they don't always work effectively. One prime example of this would be the Ford Axel Car. It was said to have failed as the world were not ready for such a futuristic car, within the that particular era.

Legal and Ethical

What does ‘copyright,’ mean?

This a legal right that one has over their document, this being an author composer, playwright, publisher, musical, dramatic, artistic and more. It’s a right granted by the state of law to that individual that protects them from getting their creation stolen or adapted.

Give three examples of different things, which you might include in your video and could be subject to copyright:

1: Picture of University I’d like to go to.
2: Pictures of Johnny Vaughn in the capital recording studio
3: Song on the footage

List two websites that give copyright free music:
2: www. Mp3skull.com

List a website where you can find free or low fee photographs:

Explain what a location release form and why is it needed for filming?

This is an agreement between the person in charge of the property/location and the person wanting to use this. It is important, as a location cannot be used unless it has been given permission for. It also protects the owner, as in it ensures that they are compensated for if anything is to get damaged.

What is a contributor release form and why is it required?

This is permit that must be obtained for ones film/music video/production to be released. Without it, it will not be published. One is also very unlikely to be authorised to enter the Film National Competition without the contributor release form.

Glossary of Media Terminology

Key Terms
Describe and explain the meaning of each term.
Video Format, eg .mov, avi
Avi is an acronym for Audio Video Interleave. It was introduced by micro soft in November 1992. Mov is a file compression format for Apple quick time. It is used for saving movies and other video like files.
Streaming
This is user ability to access and watch video’s while its still downloading. An example of this would be CNN.com, YouTube.com and many more.
File Compression
This is when a file is reduced in size to save come memory or transmission time. Compressed files are normally saved as part of a ZIP platform.  Majority of the time it can also be decompressed into it original form.

Aspect Ratio: 4:3, 16:9
An aspect ratio calculates the width and height of an image. This can be expressed in numbers. E.g  the standard television screen ratio is 4:3 as shown on the left .
Frame Rates
This is when a number of film and videos frames are displayed at every one second.

User Generated Video 2

This is my second User Generated Video, from two very amusing elderly couple.
In this video, they are trying to work a web cam, which they think, is not working. Much to their  surprise, it have been all the entire time and captured footage of them that they'd probably not want on the internet, such as the man saying 'if you drop your top a little bit, they can see you boob'. That part particularly made me laugh.

The media platform used is just the internet, however with 8,641,611 views alone, they are a hit.
what sells this video, is their innocence. It's very cute, endearing and captivating to watch. Evidently, they are a couple that love each other very much, even though they've obviously been together for so long.
Again, like the first video, I feel that the target audience for this clip is board. It relates to anyone that everyone, apart from very young children.
Considering it's amateur form, the video is well presented. The editing is easily understandable.

User Generated Video 1

This is video has hit the nation by storm. With 380,551,583 views, its pretty evident that it has been very popular.

The video, sees a pair of brothers on an ordinary day, which is about to take a turn for the worst...When charlie, bits his big brother. I feel that this video has been popular due to the elder's brothers reaction to charlie biting his finger. Although a normal unprofessional production initially, it has been used by many people and been turned into different things. My favorite, is the video above. It's a remix of the original and I think it's absolutely amazing.

The media platform that it uses, is that of internet (youtube) and music (mp3). People can now download this remix as a file in mp3 format.

I feel the target audience is universal, for the simple reasons such as it appeals to everyone. People with children, will chuckle at this video, as they may be able to relate to it as they'll have children of their own.
I feel that the editing in the video, baring the fact that it is a user generated video into consideration; it's very well done. The video is clear to understand and the sound is hearable.

Shooting Script for my Video Profile.

Audio recording: I’m just an ordinary girl. Very down to earth. I’d say I was very influential. Weather that being a good thing or not, I’ll leave down to you. Most people love me; you’d be an idiot not too to be honest. They say I’m cocky, but I disagree.
Zoom out until long shot of full body.
Speed walk (effect, fast forward) to next destination
Right we’re right outside the theatre. (whispers) We have to be extra quite as press conference is being held here. Let’s have a little sneak peak.
Image on screen slowing down, when I arrive outside the theatre. (Motions the camera to come closer. As this is being done the camera zooms into a close up of the face.  Door of theatre opens and image blacks out.
PRESS CONFERENCE SCENE
Hello. Hi, I’m from Young Inspirations and I just wondered how you are going about promoting yourself within the media industry?
Medium shot, of the ‘audience’ member asking the question.
Well right now, I’m at college studying media, which is really exciting. I also have an online radio show called ‘We talk too much’ where every week I have different guests. Just last week I had Daniel Casey, who is an inspiring director.
Over shoulder close up shot, of me talking. And close up of me in profile.
I’m from the BBC Apprentice. You said previously that you wanted to go into Journalism, but what particular type of journalism do you want to go into?
Medium close up of the ‘audience’ member asking the question
I’ve always been a big fan of broadcasting Journalism. So I’d love to go into something like that. If not TV presenting then Radio. I’m in love with either concept. If I’m lucky, I’d be grateful to have my own show, such as Jonathan Ross.
Medium long shot of me talking directly to the ‘audience member’.
Hello. I’m just a student at CWC and my question is; in about 5 years time, where do you hope to see yourself?
Medium close up of face as the question is being asked
Thinking about it logically, I hope to see myself at University. Hopefully De Monfort or Birmingham City, studying Media and broadcasting journalism.
Long shot of side profile of my face as I answer the question. Picture of the universities logo to appear on screen on after the other.
Hi. I’m a student from NJU (national Journalism Union. I just wanted to know, you say you want to be a Journalist, but are there anyone around right now; that you’d say inspires you to want to do that?
Medium shot, of ‘me’ sitting on the chair, then zoom into close up.
Johnny Vaughn. I absolutely love him. He’s a radio DJ for Capital FM. I listen to him every single morning and he makes laugh my arse off…I’m I allowed to say that? Ok. Arse off. Yeah, he’s just the funniest guy ever.
Extreme long shout of whole body from other side of the room. When asking if ‘Arse’ is allowed to be said, look straight into the camera. Image of  Johnny doing what he does best.
I hear that girl in there is going places. (Laugh) Right, let lets check out that online radio show then shall we. Let see good it really is. This is me on my show ‘We Talk Too Much’ hope you like it.
Medium close up of face and hand standing outside the theatre. Camera panning then zoom out into long shot. Effect on screen to show transition into radio interview.
On screen: ‘We Talk Too Much”
Hello, and welcome to my own show called ‘We Talk Too Much’. In attempt to promote myself as an inspiring Journalist, I have decided to interview Daniel Casey. He has just created, produced and directed a short film called ‘My Video Profile’ In his film he demonstrates he’s passion for horror films, and scares the audience with it. With scenes from classic films such as Insidious, The fourth kind and plenty more, this short by terrifying film, has proved to be a hit.
Wide side of me sitting on the chair, with a microphone in my hand, and headphones on around my ears.
Ruth: Afternoon Daniel and welcome to the show.
Daniel: Thank you for having me, I’ve heard great things.
Ruth: Thank you. You’re too kind. Let’s get straight to the point. Your film; I absolutely love by the way, but what made you come up with such a storyline?
Over the shoulder shot from Daniel to me, however, in a medium close up.
Daniel: I’ve always enjoyed watching horror films, so I wanted to see if I was capable of creating something that’s half as good as the movies I’ve been fortunate to watch.
Ruth: I see. So what is it about horror films that say… ‘Floats your boat’ then? And would you say you’re like a macho man then (laughs)
Daniel: (Laughs) I do get scared. I’m not going to sit here and deny that. But for me it’s all about the scare factor. I feel that a good horror film, should keep you on the edge of  your seat.
Wide shot of Daniel and I sitting down opposite each other. Microphone coming back and forth between us. Close up on Daniel’s face when answer some questions put to him
Ruth: That’s very interesting. Talk me through you chosen scenery. Its every unusual, wouldn’t you say?
Daniel: I wanted to replicate in my film some of the wonderful things that I had seen in some of my favorite movies. Being able to incorporate, a graveyard scene like that of Friday the 13th was amazing.
Ruth: Which director would you say has inspired you the most and why?
Daniel: Steven Spielberg. Some of his films have been my favorites like, E.T.
Ruth: So what’s the next project on the cards for you then?
Daniel: Well, right now; if I’m honest with you, I have nothing planned. However, I do know whatever it is; it’s going to be better than this.

Wide shot of Daniel and I on screen. Pan shot of just Daniel talking, and then back to me. Medium shot of both of us. Zoom out in a long shot , and finally close up of me.
Ruth: finally, where would you like to see yourself in 10 years time:
Daniel: I see myself writing and directing more amazing films. Having some top names acting in my productions and having my films being watched in the cinemas. How’s that for ambitious aye? (Laughs)
Over the shoulder shot, from Daniel to me . Over the shoulder, close up shot of Daniel answering and finally close u of Daniel,

Viral Marketing Commercial Analysis Part 2

This is one of my all time favourite commercial. If I recall correctly, I used to dislike KFC food untill seeing this. The advert is introduced to us in a style of a musical, where a man asks the woman named Sandra if he could have a bite of her mini fillet burger. After belting out some awesome notes along side showing the audience her vocal abilities, she replies 'No'.

This advertisment works every well, and the reason I feel it was so popular was due to the humour it brought with it. It's funny because, the audience are left anticipating Sadra's response to the man's question. The audience expects a yes, because we're guessng they are friends. But when she, says 'no', we gather just how tasty the burger might be. I've come to fnd that if something makes you laugh, you are more likely to remember it because of the way you felt at the time as opposed to something that didn't.

The URL of the advrtisement can be found, on the television and interent on sites such youtube and the KFC offical webpage. I think it also has a very versatile attended target audience; from those who love KFC foods, to just those who enjoy a good sing a long. Also both males and females.
The main purpose of this video is to advertise/promote their new product; that being the Mini Fillet Chicken Burger.
Again, the technical aspect of the this advertisment, was very good as it's a professional film. Images, sound and editing were all done to a high standard.

Viral Marketing Commercial Analysis Part 1

I have choosen an advertisement of one of my all time favourite films to analyse. Get Him To The Greek, is a 2010 American comedic film, by the directors of 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' and the producers of 'Knocked Up' and 'Supperbad' . The film is a follow up of 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall', in which we follow Jason Segel's character's *(Petter Bretters) attempts at getting over his Ex film star girlfriend Sarah Marshall, who he has just found has been having an long term affair with English rock star Aldous Snow *( Russell Brand). However, Get Him To The Greek, concentrates a little further on the life, ups and downs of rock star, Snow. Aaron Green *(Jonah Hill) works for *Capitol Records* and is given the chance of a life time, when he is put in charge of getting Aldous Snow from London to the Greek Theatre in Seatle. Things arent as merry as it seems when keeping up with Snows drinking and drug taking becomes somewhat a challenge for innocent Green to deal with.

The trailer shows the audience, short scenes of what the film will consist of. The target audience for this film, I think are those who have seen the previous film, loved it and wanted to see what 'happened next'. This is one of the reasons as to why I immediately wanted to watch it when, seeing the commercial advert; that, and the fact that Russell Brand starred. I love Russell Brand :D. Comedic movie/film lovers would also be a well anticipated audience for this advertisment. The URL of where the advert can be found is on the television, internet, and advertising newpapers such as The Metro.
This advert has many purposes. However, I think the main purpose is to advertise the new film and persaude people to go and see it.

Technical aspects are absolutely amazing. This is to be expected of a perfessional production. The video is clear and easily seen without any blury aspects. The sound quality is tolerable, when watching on the streaming website of Youtube.com, but other media agencies such as television and radio; the sound is good. Editing quality is very well done.
