The Purpose Of Channel Idents
All Channel Ident have the same purpose always. This is to establish their brand as a television channel, attract more viewers and maintain their rating by convincing them to continue watching their channel. The more creative the Ident, I feel the more memorable it becomes. An example of this would be the BBC One Ident which will appear before the next programme if about to start. Accompanied by the Ident will follow as short voice over, of what is to be expected next on that channel. As the BBC is not an advertising telvision broadcasting company unlike ITV, the only way they make their money is my the amount of viewers they have. Therefore I think it's important for them to show their Ident as much as they can. One thing that the BBC do very well is, promote their other channels too. E.g during a voice over, they may make references to BBC 2, 3, 4 and BBC Radio One.

Intro to Channel Ident
A Channel Ident is the strongest visual representation of a particular television channel. Although a few seconds long, the Ident is suppose to sell the channel to it's audience in order to boost its ratings. It is normally about 20-30 seconds long, to prevent the audience from getting bored after a while. After having watched several examples of Channel idents, it's clear to see what sort of things they have in common. This being, they always find a way of co-operating their own logo in the visual. The logo is personal to that specific channel. E.g the logo for that E4 channel is as shown on the right. The colours of the log plays a big part in aiding the audience in remember their channel as it reinforces their brand. The colour purple will forever be associated with E4. Most if not all channel idents use audio in the form of short instrumental music, as opposed to voice overs.
